A pedido da bióloga Mª Inês Seabra, pedem-se voluntários para participar em trabalhos de campo na área da biologia marinha costeira, a decorrerem no Laboratório de Ciências do Mar da Universidade de Évora, em Sines. O trabalho decorrerá com periodicidade bimensal e as datas dos próximos trabalhos são: 10 a 17 de Janeiro, 8 a 16 de Março e 5 a 12 de Maio. O alojamento é gratuito.

"Evolution and conservation management of an archipelago radiation:

 the giant Galápagos tortoises"

Abstract

Isolated oceanic archipelagos have played a major role in the
development of evolutionary theory. They contain some of the world¹s
most remarkable biological radiations and offer a unique setting for
studying spatial and temporal patterns of biological diversification.

Archipelago radiations also offer challenging systems for the
implementation of conservation policies because descendent populations
may exhibit different levels of adaptive divergence, reproductive
isolation, and phylogenetic distinctiveness. In this talk I will
describe results of an ongoing team study of an iconic archipelago

radiation: the giant tortoises of the Galápagos Islands. Our study
illustrates the role of volcanism in shaping evolutionary history in
one of the world¹s greatest natural laboratories of evolution and the
value of long-term genetic analysis and museum specimens in informing
conservation management.
